“Prevention” is a pretty big topic. There are a lot of medical issues that can be prevented, like heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, sexually transmitted diseases, and more. Since there is such a variety of things that can be prevented, there is a variety of careers directed toward helping people prevent them. The preventative medicine field is in demand. Here a few popular preventative careers.

  • Dietician / Nutritionist: Obesity, high cholesterol, and poor diet are real problems and are among the top preventable causes of death. Careers intended to help people make healthier food choices are likely to be in increasing demand as our waistlines grow.
  • Therapist: Alcoholism, STDs, and drug use are also among the top causes of preventable death. Sometimes, speaking with a therapist can help an addict or potential addict work through the psychological reasons that may turn them toward heavy drinking, drug use or promiscuity.
  • Physical Therapist: The number of people with arthritis or injuries that require therapy as part of recovery will help keep physical therapy positions in demand.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that tobacco use is “the single most important preventable risk to human health…” and a World Health Organization report found that tobacco was the single greatest cause of preventable death. A variety of healthcare professionals and even hypnotists work in preventing tobacco-related deaths.

Hypertension, physical inactivity, traffic collisions, infectious diseases, and deaths involving firearms are all among the top causes of preventable death in the U.S. and around the world. Career fields from physical trainer to motivational speaker to police officer all work hard to prevent these problems.

Top Careers in the Health Care Field

The medical field can be a great place to seek a job, since it is consistently one of the fastest growing career paths in the United States. Those working in the medical profession often feel a great sense of accomplishment as they are able to provide patient benefits. Typically they will work directly with doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals within hospitals or private practice clinics. Since these offices are located just about everywhere, a person trained to work in health care will usually not have a problem finding a job.

Every person who is part of the health care team plays an integral role in patient care. From receptionists to medical assistants to nurses to physicians to those involved in the billing process, each will play a part in order to create the best experience. Over the next ten years, it is predicted that there will be 3 million new jobs in the field.

One great job possibility is a medical and coding consultant. These employees can be trained through technical schooling, which typically takes up to two years. There are additional certification programs that can be completed, which will often increase income potential. Some of these positions are done from home, so working parents might find this to be a great option. Others will work in a clinic setting, working directly with the doctors in order to ensure proper billing is completed.

Being a part of the health care experience is a rewarding place to work. Many people are foregoing other technical programs to become a member of a medical office team.

Physicians Assistants Medical Role

In the world of medicine a fairly new career option has been growing over the last decade, that of Physicians Assistant, or more simply, a PA.

Though not a “doctor” in the classical sense, particularly since their medical education is not as long or extensive as that of a doctor, a PA is nevertheless a healthcare professional who has been trained and is licensed to practice medicine – however they are limited according to the supervision of a licensed physician.

PAs are licensed to do many of the same professional duties generally performed by a physician, including, examinations, collecting medical histories, diagnose illnesses, prescribe medicine, order treatments, and refer patients to necessary specialists.  There is a PA-Physician Practice Agreement which spells out exactly what the PA is allowed to legally do under the supervision of a physician. They are not allowed to go outside the scope of this document.

PAs  are allowed to practice in any medical field and often specialize in areas of surgery.  They often moved from one medical or surgical field to another during their careers, learning many different types of medical practices.

They have their own specific medical licenses which are different from those issued to physicians.  They work under the authority of this license and not as an appendage to the supervising physician’s license.

Depending upon the state in which the PA practices medicine, there are some limits according to that state’s laws regarding the PAs ability to prescribe medication.  These limits are imposed by the state through the Drug enforcement Administration. For example, PAs in Hawaii, Florida and Alabama are not allowed to prescribe any controlled substances at all.

Becoming a Medical Malpractice Lawyer

It’s a shaky business — the medical field. And bad things happen all the time. Thankfully, you have some professionals out there that can work to the benefit of the patient who’s wronged somehow in the hospital, provided that the lawsuit is legitimate.

As one of the more higher skilled law practices in the industry, climbing the mountain to get to the top and become a full-fledged California medical malpractice attorney or Chicago medical malpractice attorney — or any city, for that matter — can be quite the adventure and a challenge, indeed. But here’s what you need to know:

  1. Graduate from college with a major in pre-law or business.
  2. Take the Law School Admission Test, or LSAT.
  3. Score high!
  4. After you’re phenomenal score is on paper, apply to as many law schools as possible.
  5. Why? Because many law schools have extremely high standards.
  6. When you finally find your law school, study for three years.
  7. Apply for as many clerkships at medical malpractice law firms as possible.
  8. Graduate from law school and then take (shudder!) the BAR EXAM.
  9. Recognize that the BAR EXAM is in capital letters, because this is the one test that will kill your brain.
  10. After reviving your brain from the apparent terror of the BAR EXAM, find a firm to work for.
  11. Pursue board certification, and guess what — you’re good to go!

It sounds pretty cut and dry — but just recognize that it’s a lot to do. If you’ve got the perseverance and strength for it, though, go for it. It’s a prestigious line of work. It has to be, though, with this list of requirements!

Advantages of Refinancing Your Auto Loans

The medical field is a very recognized, respected profession. It is also one of professions in our society that requires large amounts of training and education. If you have decided to enter the medical profession or advance your current medical training, you will find that it will take years of school and thousands of dollars. How will you pay for this new endeavor?

One of the avenues that may be worthwhile to explore is refinancing your auto loan. Car refinance is a relatively easy process and usually doesn’t require a lot of paperwork or time. There are many advantages to refinancing an auto loan.

One of the advantages is that depending on the amount of the loan and the amount of principal the consumer has paid off, the original payment can be reduced by a significant amount. This can be achieved by lengthening the original loan or achieving a lower interest rate of the life of the loan.

When refinancing, it is also possible to combine payments and write one convenient check. If the consumer has two auto loans there is a chance the two loans could be combined for one easy payment. The payment may also be less than the original two payments. Refinancing on multiple vehicles also usually results in paying less interest due to the fact the debt is reduced to one note instead of two.   This can result in significant savings to the consumer.

Paying for higher education can be costly and an auto loan refinance may be the way to do it!

Understanding Culture to Treat Pain

People have difference levels of tolerance to pain and also have various manners in dealing with it. For a very long time now, educational curriculum of nurses teaches them to depend entirely on a patient’s statement. This is the reason why they can often fail to notice factors like a patient’s tone of voice or their expression in order to better identify the level of pain. Although a patient’s description of the level of pain that he or she is suffering from is a reliable source, there are far too many factors influencing a patient’s perception of pain for their statement to be considered conclusive.

 

One of the major influencers of the perception and approach of a patient towards pain is the culture that the person belongs to. Merely diagnosing the level of physical pain and providing relevant treatment is not sufficient for effectively managing pain and nurses need advanced pain management training and cultural awareness to know just how to deal with a patient who is in pain. Here are some of the points that will help nurses effectively manage pain:

 

  1. Pain doesn’t always need to be treated and can actually be prevented if a nurse knows the nature and level of pain as well as a patient’s tolerance to it.
  2. In several cultures, it considered a sign of weakness to display signs of pain which is why a patient may not report escalating pain to the health provider or even downplay the intensity.
  3. Having  a care giver who is aware of their cultures increases the level of comfort in a patient and help them describe the nature of pain more accurately.

How to Get Started

Most of the career choices individuals make will center on getting a degree. While some careers do allow you to enter with just an associate’s degree, others focus on bachelor’s degrees or higher. You can find specific degree options at EarnMyDegree.com.

  • A home health aide is a person who comes to a person’s home to provide services, including basic medical care or just companionship. To get started, you will need at least an associate’s degree.
  • Another career choice to consider is a certified nursing or medical assistant. This position will provide you with outstanding opportunities to get started in various careers in the medical area. This is a good way to get into many of the health care jobs in demand.
  • Medical transcription is another area to get started in, especially if you want to work into a career that does not require direct interaction with patients. You will need to get basic training and a certification to enter into this career choice.

Applying For Medical Education

There are many more potential medical students than available spaces at medical schools in the US, so applying for medical education can be daunting.

Medical schools in the US do not have sufficient capacity in order to train the numbers of doctors needed due to the growing and aging population. There is certainly no shortage of students with sufficient intelligence and the desire to train at medical school, but the educational system is simply not capable of providing enough places for them. It has been reported that in 2006 alone, there was 400,000 applicants chasing 14,000 available places. This is one of the reasons why so many foreign medical graduates are employed in the US each year, despite many US citizens being denied the opportunity to train.

The medical profession is pretty diverse, and there are many different routes and pathways which can be followed. Many doctors choose to work in occupational medicine (within a firm or company), pharmaceutical research, join the armed forces or in public health medicine. All of the doctors who specialize in these fields though, generally have the same start on the medical education ladder.

Medical School

To apply for medical school in the US, you generally need to already have a four year bachelor’s degree although there are rare exceptions. This should be from an accredited university or college. You will actually attend the medical school on a four year graduate course. The criteria for admission will vary, although, as mentioned above, there is lots of competition with many applicants chasing very few places, so the medical schools really are able to pick the cream of the crop and top qualifications are generally necessary in order to secure a place.

Many US medical students are now opting to study at medical schools in other countries. This can be the ideal solution for some students, and although it means that they will have to pay full fees, very often the medical education is actually cheaper in other countries than in the US.

Due to organizations such as IHMEC (International Health and Medical Education Center) there is a global policy which ensures that the qualifications needed to practice medicine anywhere in the world are recognized and achievable. You may find that applying for medical education in a foreign country can be more affordable, with a higher chance of acceptance than by trying to attend a medical school in the US.

Doctors and Their Patients: Why it’s Hard for Both Sides

The world of medicine has long been an area of appeal for centuries. Since the 1980s, the number of professionals working within the restorative field has steadily grown.  While many look for jobs based upon general interest and income potential, many people are increasingly concerned.

Doctors have a right to receive payment for services rendered, but health insurance claims may take a while to be processed. Malpractice insurance is a requirement nationwide for things such as experimental surgery and new prescription drugs on the market. It is mandatory for all medical personnel to have such insurance in place for any extenuating circumstances that can arise. With this in mind, it’s often an expensive price that takes a chunk out of their salary.

Patient benefits also seem to be costly to both consumers and medical staff members alike. Some suffer in silence with ailments when insurance companies deny insurance applications-and there are still cases resulting in refusal for coverage. This is worrisome for perspective patients and people working in medicinal fields. Medical professionals urge people to keep trying to find an insurance carrier. Some carriers cannot deny coverage by law. Health insurance benefits can withdrawal an exorbitant amount of money from paychecks, but if we pay out-of-pocket its impact may be far greater on our wallets regardless of personal wealth.

Everything in our lives has pros and cons, but the fact remains that many consumers search far and wide for medical expertise whenever we need it. Although we may already feel comfortable with our family physicians and specialists, some of us need to get in the habit of seeking a second opinion before we make decisions.
